Welcome back to FlyWashington Magazine , our first edition since a two-year hiatus prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic , which has had such a profound impact on travel , business and almost every aspect of our daily lives . A lot has happened at Reagan National and Dulles International airports during that time .
Reagan National has undergone a complete facelift , with a new concourse , new security checkpoint areas , new and improved concessions and other amenities , and new names on our terminals , gates and parking garages . As a result of this $ 1 billion capital improvement program , called Project Journey , much more of the airport is now “ behind security ,” giving passengers greater access to shops , restaurants and other services throughout the airport and making the entire facility easier and more convenient to navigate .
At Dulles International , we are celebrating our 60th year of service , with a number of exhibits and events marking the day in November 1962 when President John F . Kennedy and former President Dwight Eisenhower dedicated for first commercial airport in the United States designed to handle the new technology of jet airliners connecting the Washington area to points across the country and around the world . And six decades after it opened for business , Dulles Airport is still growing . New airlines and destinations – including Iberia Airlines ’ recently added service to Madrid and Ethiopian Airlines ’ new service to Lome , Togo – are expanding the global travel options in the National Capital Region .
We brought back the annual Dulles Day and Plane Pull celebration , which draws over 10,000 visitors each September , after being on hold during the pandemic . In addition , we are eagerly anticipating the opening of the new Metrorail Silver Line , which will provide rail service from Dulles to downtown Washington and points across the region .
So as the area ’ s trees across our beautiful fields and mountains transform from summer green to the bright red , orange and golden hues of autumn , we hope our passengers enjoy their visits to Virginia , Maryland and the District of Columbia – or wherever your travels take you . We hope you enjoy this issue of FlyWashington , and we thank you for choosing Reagan National and Dulles International airports .
