San Francisco: Gold, Fog, & Reinvention
San Francisco’ s origins are steeped in symbolism. According to tradition, the Spanish flag was raised at the Presidio, and the first mass celebrated at Mission San Francisco de Asís on June 29, 1776— just days before the Declaration of Independence was signed in Philadelphia. That near-simultaneous timing gives added meaning to San Francisco’ s America 250 celebrations, which honor both the city and the nation.
For its first seventy years, San Francisco was a quiet colonial outpost, passing from Spain to Mexico and eventually to the United States with little fanfare. Everything changed in 1848 when gold was discovered in the California foothills. Fortune seekers poured into the region, and the population of the modest settlement exploded from roughly 1,000 residents to more than 25,000. Almost overnight, the Gold Rush transformed San Francisco into a booming American city that attracted newcomers from across the country and nearly every corner of Europe. That spirit of optimism, risk-taking, and reinvention remains one of the most enduring expressions of the American character.

My food always has a nod to my heritage, whether that is Nigerian or Jamaican or Creole. I use the ingredients as building blocks to create dishes.
Reinvention has characterized San Francisco ever since. The city was rebuilt after the devastating earthquake and fire of 1906. It later became a hub for the Beat Generation, the Summer of Love, the gay rights movement, and ultimately the technology revolution that transformed the modern world. Each era left its imprint, making the city renowned for both diversity and innovation.
San Francisco’ s best-known attractions continue to draw over 20 million visitors each year. The Golden Gate Bridge is one of the country’ s most iconic landmarks, while Alcatraz Island, the former prison turned national park, ranks among the top sights. Fisherman’ s Wharf is a favorite, and the city’ s famous cable cars, designated a National Historic Landmark, still run up and down Nob Hill as they have since 1873.

For lodging, The Battery, an exclusive private members club, offers fourteen luxury suites and temporary“ Resident Member” status to guests at one of the most stylish addresses in Jackson Square. Meanwhile, the soon-to-open Hearst Hotel from the Auberge Resorts Collection promises to redefine San Francisco luxury by restoring a 1911 Beaux-Arts landmark with 150 rooms, a rooftop terrace, and a holistic Auberge Spa in the city’ s heart.
When it comes to dining, San Francisco is nearly unmatched. Besides the beloved Ferry Building Marketplace, a tribute to California food culture, the city also boasts one of the highest concentrations of Michelin-starred restaurants in the country, including the three-Michelin-starred Atelier Crenn, led by renowned chef Dominique Crenn, James Beard Outstanding Chef finalist Michael Tusk’ s Quince, and Benu from chef Corey Lee.
