Los Angeles and across the surrounding territory. San Diego, also secured during that campaign, later became one of America’ s most important military centers. Farther west, Honolulu’ s Pearl Harbor and its naval facilities proved critical in both world wars, even as the devastating attack of December 7, 1941, marked one of the darkest moments in American history.
This is the story of the American West. It’ s a story of grit, resilience, and a stubborn determination to keep moving forward. In short, it’ s the story of an America that was set in motion in 1776 and has kept its momentum ever since. It’ s also a story still told today in museums and attractions in each of those cities because it’ s just as much a part of the American story as the Mayflower, the Boston Tea Party, and the American Revolution itself.
San Diego: The Birthplace of California
San Diego is often called the birthplace of California, and its history stretches back thousands of years before European settlement. The Kumeyaay people inhabited the region for more than 12,000 years before the arrival of the Spanish. Modern San Diego traces its founding to July 16, 1769, when Father Junípero Serra and Father Juan Crespí established Mission San Diego de Alcalá.
The city’ s development reflects that of much of the American West. Spanish control shifted to Mexican rule after 1821, and San Diego officially joined the United States in 1848, with California becoming a state in 1850. For many years, it remained a quiet, sun-soaked backwater, but then the Navy arrived, and San Diego discovered its true purpose. Today, the city hosts one of the largest concentrations of military facilities in the world.
Two hundred and fifty years might seem like just a blip in the history of the universe, but for America, it’ s a significant milestone marking two and a half remarkable centuries of growth, expansion, and limitless ambition.
As communities across the nation prepare to commemorate America’ s 250th anniversary, much of the spotlight will naturally shine on the Founding Fathers and the original thirteen colonies, where the American experiment began. That attention is deserved. Yet while the nation’ s ideals were born along the Eastern Seaboard, America’ s fullest expression emerged as the country pushed westward across the continent toward the Pacific. America’ s story may have started in the East, but many of its defining chapters were written in the vast and restless American West.
It was in the West that the scale of America’ s aspirations truly became clear. The phrase“ from sea to shining sea” evolved from a hopeful vision into a geographic reality. Cities such as San Diego, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Honolulu are now celebrated for their beauty and natural allure, but each also played a pivotal role in shaping the nation itself. Together, they reflect how the belief in Manifest Destiny helped transform a loose collection of colonies into a global power whose reach stretches across oceans.
During the Mexican-American War of 1846 – 1848, the U. S. Navy’ s Pacific Squadron captured San Francisco’ s harbor, securing a vital gateway to the Pacific. The California campaign unfolded largely in
San Diego generally takes a relaxed approach to its history, emphasizing its sunny climate and magnificent beaches. However, its rich past is evident through notable attractions. For example, the USS Midway Museum, located on a decommissioned aircraft carrier along downtown bayfront, ranks among the world’ s most visited ship museums and is considered one of the best of its kind in the United States. Old Town San Diego State Historic Park features five original adobe buildings along with reconstructed sites. The Junípero Serra Museum, perched high above the city, offers insights into San Diego’ s earliest history and panoramic coastal views. Additionally, the Cabrillo National Monument commemorates the first successful European expedition to the U. S. West Coast by Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo, providing spectacular views of San Diego’ s harbor and skyline. The Veterans Museum and Memorial Center in Balboa Park, housed in the former Naval Hospital chapel on Inspiration Point, honors military veterans.
Beyond the city’ s historical landmarks, San Diego offers many attractions. The Hotel del Coronado, opened in 1888 on a barrier island across the bay, remains one of the top Victorian resort hotels in the American West. The Gaslamp Quarter is the core of a lively downtown food and nightlife scene, and Addison at the Fairmont Grand Del Mar, with its ten-course tasting menu featuring regional ingredients, is one of only three restaurants in Southern California to earn three Michelin stars.
