Critical Life Stages After Childhood

“ The data shows that in young adults , cavity rates tend to be lower , but it depends on how you define it ,” Dr . Levy explains . “ From adolescence into college age , from 12 to 25 , cavity rates actually tend to be higher . After age 12 , most teens and young adults are more independent and more likely to not be under the direct supervision of their parents for dietary recommendations , toothbrushing behaviors , or getting to the dentist for checkups and fluoride therapy . Maybe they used to go
to the dentist regularly , but when they got to college or entered the workplace , they didn ’ t continue . They don ’ t care for their teeth as well . They have junky diets . Interestingly , as they become more traditional young adults , maybe they ’ re married or have a long-term partner , or have children and family responsibilities , they tend to be more responsible again .”
