SAINT GEORGE’S ROSE
First of all, the festival of Saint George’s is celebrated throughout Spain on April 23rd, the day the knight George died. According to popular legend, a rose was born from the blood of the dragon that Saint George’s defeated and he gave it to him. to the princess he had saved. For this reason it is popular to give a rose to women on April 23rd.
Secondly, for Saint George’s it is common to find books in all the languages spoken in Catalonia. In Barcelona the main meeting point is located on ¨La Rambla¨,which is filled with book stalls and flowers.
In conclusion, Saint George’s is a very important festivity in Spain in which couples exchange gifts: men receive a book and women a rose.
It all started with the history of Saint Jorge. He was a brave knight who traveled around the world riding a white horse. One day, he arrived at a small town. Next to that, lived a dragon, and he was terrifying the whole town. The king had to make a deal with him, everyday, one person of the town was to be eaten by the dragon with no objects.
On the day Saint Jorge arrived in the town, it was the turn of the princess. Everyone was crying. The king was devastated. But, at the moment the dragon was to eat the princess, Saint Jorge appeared and fought against the dragon. He saved the princess and killed the dragon with his sword, over the blood of the dragon a rose bloomed.
This legend is originally from Montblanc, Tarragona. And the action of bringing roses to someone you love on 23 of April appears from the bravery of Saint Jorge.
But some people also give books as a present, because it coincides with the International Book Day.
I usually saw that women received roses, and the men received the book, sometimes is upside down. I think it's nice to have a party where you can give all the roses you want to people you want.
