The oldest masonry fort in the continental U.S.,
it was built (1672-1695) to protect the town and
the treasure fleets on their way home to Spain. It
features daily demonstrations of Spanish military
life, including musket and cannon firings.

On this site in 1565, the Spanish killed 245 French
Huguenots in a struggle over control of Florida. In
1740, the Spanish built Fort Matanzas here, a small-
fortified watchtower that guarded the southern
entrance to St. Augustine. The site offers nature
trails and a free ferry to the fort.

The first free African settlement in North America.
Although nothing remains of the fort, the site
and visitor center memorialize the slaves who
fled the American colonies to find freedom in
