education technology company, a researcher, a writer, or an artist—she enjoyed
meeting each challenge. Still, her strongest calling was photography—ever since

It’s a myth that being new to photography means instantly have to learn numerous
complex settings and jump into the deep end of the pool! In fact, doing so turns
most people off to the amazing, fun and incredibly rewarding world of photography!
Many people who own a camera—whether it’s a phone, tablet, compact camera

complicated settings. Though manual settings have a lot to offer in regard to your
creative control and image quality, with today’s cameras they often aren’t required to
get started and take quality images.
Through interactive activities, this fun and engaging session will introduce you seven
powerful, but simple techniques to help you first identify important qualities in
“good” photographs, then avoid common mistakes, recognize a subject’s potential,
and ultimately capture it beautifully through your lens – all on “Auto.” No complex
settings required. Suggested Gear List: Camera

The Histogram: “The Secret decoder ring” of your camera |
Photography Seminar
Location: Celebration Hall at St. Anastasia, 5205 A1A South
THURSDAY 10 TO 11:30 A.M.
Price: $25 | Max No. People: 30 | Difficulty Level: Beginner to Intermediate
The histogram can be a confusing tool to many. Many of us haven’t heard of it- and
for those who have, it may not seem important. For those who have heard of it, there
are constricting rules around its use that have led to gross misunderstandings about
whether to get “the mountain in the middle,” or “expose to the right,” etc. But what
about when those guidelines aren’t appropriate at all? It can all get confusing and lead
to misunderstandings that can hinder your photographic genius! The histogram is like
a “secret decoder ring” that can give you glimpses of your photograph far better than
using the LCD screen alone. It helps you understand so much about the color, detail,
and the look you are trying to achieve when used properly. This session is aimed at
those who would like to truly understand the importance of using the histogram in
your camera to improve your work – and how exactly to do so. Participants will:
o Learn how to read a basic histogram for black to white values, as well as for color
o Understand when your images are saturated vs oversaturated, in camera
o Learn when you start to lose details in your highlights, darks, and colors at
certain exposures
o Learn to adjust exposure to get the results you want by reading the histogram
Suggested Gear List: Notepad, digital camera. Manual to know where to locate your histogram (please review
manual in advance)
