THE GREAT DICTATOR - 1940
No must watch movie list is justified if the name of Charlie Chaplin, arguably the
greatest movie icon and personality of all time, is missing. This Charlie Chaplin
movie is the first of its kind for being his first true sound movie after all those
celebrated silent movies. The film shows the portrayal of Chaplin in the dual roles
of a tyrant dictator and that of a Jewish Barber. The movie was a personal target
of Chaplin at several historic personalities. With Chaplin, as usual, handling almost
all the major nuances of film making, the outcome is often considered one of
the finest Chaplin movies, especially known for the iconic concluding segment’s
speech. The script of the movie is preserved at the main library of Academy
of Motion Arts and Pictures in California and is up for public viewership for the
purpose of learning.
Chaplin’s half-
brother Sydney filed
a plagiarism lawsuit
on Charlie stating
that his own 1921 film
called King, Queen,
Joker was also a
similar story.
