BOARD OF GOVERNORS’ HIGHLIGHTS MARCH 10, 2017
• Board Chair Robert Couch, MD, MBA, welcomed the Board of Governors to the new GLMS headquarters at 328 E. Main Street, saying“ I’ m very impressed with the job Bert and the staff have done, and I’ m really excited about the changes still to come.”
• GLMS Past-President Bruce Scott, MD, was presented with an exquisite original art piece created by Brook White, artist / owner of Flame Run, a locally owned glassblowing shop in downtown Louisville.“ Thank you Bruce for all you’ ve done for GLMS and the work you continue to do at the national level,” Dr. Couch said.( See photo to right)
• Treasurer Frank Burns, MD, presented the 2016 financial report, explaining to the Board that GLMS saw an improvement of $ 48,000. While revenues decreased by seven percent, expenses decreased nine percent over prior year( 2015) operating financials.
• The Board approved $ 1,000 to help sponsor an AMA reception for Kim Moser, who was recently elected as President of the AMA Alliance. Moser is a past-president of the KMA Alliance and a nurse from Northern Kentucky. The event will be held in Chicago during the upcoming AMA meeting.
• Dr. Burns, chair of the Policy and Advocacy Team, gave an update on recent legislative progress. He noted a great turnout at the Angel’ s Envy Distillery Legislative Reception with seven legislators and more than 40 GLMS members talking over craft cocktails and gourmet food from local restaurant Harvest. The event was sponsored by the GLMS Foundation.
• Dr. Burns turned his attention to the current health care legislation in both houses of the Kentucky Congress. Senate Bill 4( Medical Review Panels) was recently signed by Governor Matt Bevin. SB 18( Peer Review Protection) is less certain and has taken on amendments that hurt the bill. Dr. Burns encouraged members to call their legislator and urge them to pass the bill with no amendments. SB 89( Smoking Cessation) has passed both houses and is awaiting signature from Governor Bevin.
• Discussion then turned to House Bill 333( Fentanyl Regulation and 3 Day Prescription Limit). The bill, which was pushed by the governor, has drawn lots of discussion and debate for the‘ 3-day with some exceptions’ limit it would put on opioid prescriptions. However, some version of the bill is expected to pass in this legislative session so physicians are urged to stay aware of what changes are taking place on the legislation.
• GLMS CEO Bert Guinn, MBA, CAE, gave an update about the upcoming President’ s Celebration which will welcome incoming President Robert Zaring, MD, MMM, and celebrate 125 years of GLMS.
