Treasurer Robert Couch, MD, MBA, reported
87 percent of active members have paid their
2014 dues. The number is up slightly from
last year, but still trending behind previous
years at this point.
•
GLMS Board Chair Russell Williams, MD, and
President-Elect Bruce Scott, MD, encouraged
board members to consider fellow colleagues
who might be interested in joining the Medical
Society Professional Services Board. “If you
know someone who may like to be involved,
please contact the society,” said Dr. Scott.
•
Dr. Scott also announced the GLMS President’s Day Celebration will take place Sunday,
June 1, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Historic
Louisville Water Tower and WaterWorks Museum at 3005 River Road in Louisville. The event
is open to all GLMS members and a guest.
•
UofL Dean Toni Ganzel, MD, spoke to the society about the school’s recent probationary
status with the Liaison Committee on Medical
Education. The LCME found nine of their 131
standards unmet. Dr. Ganzel said the majority
of changes have either already taken place
or will during the 2014-15 academic year.
“Though we don’t agree with their decision,
we do share their vision, and that is to make
our educational programs as good as they
can possibly be,” said Dr. Ganzel, who will
be writing an article for an upcoming edition
of Louisville Medicine to further educate the
public on changes taking place at UofL.

Brad Sutton, MD, MBA, addressed the board
with a presentation about the Return on Investment (ROI) of participating in the Greater
Louisville Medical Society. Through an evaluation of a myriad of services provided by the
GLMS, Dr. Sutton found the annual membership dues of $340 to have an ROI of $2,991.71,
nearly 800 percent. “That’s pret ty significant,
and I think it’s an underestimation given that
the value of some GLMS services is hard to
quantify,” he said, underlining the benefits
of bringing a diverse group of physicians together. “To the degree we can get together as
a region and a community, we’ll all benefit.”

Associate Executive Director Bert Guinn,
MBA, CAE, reminded the board that GLMS
committed $15,000 over three years to UofL’s
ongoing Residents in Business program, set
to take place May 20, 21 and 22. Dr. Russell
Williams commented on how positive last
year’s event was. “I can’t tell you how many
surgical residents who work with me were
blown away by that course,” he said.
•
Karyn Hascal, President of The Healing Place,
spoke about the recent Freedom Dinner which
raised more than $187,000 for the organization. “This was more than double anything
we raised in the past and way more than we
anticipated. I really appreciate everyone who
was there and participated in the live auction,” she said.
•
Hascal also said work has begun on the capital campaign for the construction of The Healing Place’s new men’s center. GLMS Vice-President Heather Harmon, MD,is co-chairing the
group. The Healing Place will also host a free
breakfast at The Olmsted from 7:30 to 9 a.m.
Wednesday, June 11.
•
GLMS Alliance President Ilene Bosscher,
MA, MDiv, LMFT, LPCC, told the board the
Alliance has seen a 44 percent increase in
paid membership in her year as president.
The Alliance also hosted the first ever men’s
activity committee, expanded membership
eligibility to include children of physicians,
increased the number of grants from two to
seven, raised $2,500 in events such as silent
auctions and hosted the AMA alliance at the
Brown Hotel in March. “Most importantly,
we fulfilled our mission of caring about our
fellow men, women and family members in
our medical community and reaching out
widely to incorporate those who have not
been members,” Bosscher said.
•
Dr. Scott reported to the board that for the
17th time in 11 years, the US Congress has put
a patch on the Medicare Sustainable Growth
Rate. The patch delayed the potential 24 percent cuts for another year and also delayed
the implementation of the ICD-10 conversion.
“In the end, I think we got the best we were
going to get,” he said noting while a permanent SGR fix had widespread bi-partisan support, it got caught in debates over funding.
