Chair Jay Davidson spoke to the board, noting the facility has a 75 percent success rate. Davidson said the return on investment for a donation was tenfold when compared to the community costs of arresting, detaining, booking and punishing each addict, and this is all without mentioning the human cost. Neal Richmond, MD, director of Louisville Metro EMS, gave board members an update on emergency services in Louisville. Louisville hospital and ambulance staff are being much more cautious regarding potential Ebola contact. EMS workers have been trained to pick out flu like symptoms and are required to ask a patient’s travel history. Dr. Richmond also said steps were being taken to better utilize alternate transportation to health care facilities besides ambulances. He explained many people who use ambulances don’t yy yy yy need them and if other transportation can be found, ambulances can be freed up for more essential uses. GLMS President Bruce Scott, MD, and Board Chair James Patrick Murphy, MD, MMM, both reported positively on the Congressional Candidate Forums hosted by GLMS for Rep. John Yarmuth and his challenger, Michael Macfarlane, MD. “This is another example of us getting more involved with policy and advocacy,” said Dr. Scott. “I think it was a positive move. KMA Exec. Vice President Patrick Padgett announced next year’s annual KMA meeting will be held over the weekend due to a change in contract with the Hyatt Regency hotel. The KMA received a federal grant for its leadership conference which will take place during the 2015 meeting.
