Australians love caravanning and getting away to the great outdoors continues, yet towing or modifying your vehicle into your dream getaway rig makes understanding vehicle weight and payload critical for vehicle owners. Towing a caravan or loading up for a weekend getaway can lead to unexpected and undesirable outcomes, including potential negative impacts to vehicle safety, performance, and legal compliance.
Vehicle owners may have heard the various terms used to describe a vehicle’ s weight, including kerb weight( the base weight of the vehicle), gross vehicle mass( GVM), and payload capacity, without fully understanding their meaning and importance. Payload- the maximum weight a vehicle can safely carry, including passengers, cargo, and accessories – is often misunderstood, but is essential for vehicle owners to understand when contemplating purchasing accessories for their vehicle.
When a vehicle’ s payload is exceeded, it can lead to increased strain on suspension and chassis components and reduced braking efficiency which is a potential safety issue, and importantly, present a potential legal risk to the owners.
Accessories such as bull bars, roof racks, tow bars, and drawer systems enhance functionality and convenience, yet add significant weight. For example, installing a bull bar, drawers, fridge and a roof rack can easily account for a few hundred kilograms of a vehicle’ s payload. These additions eat into the available payload, leaving less room for passengers and gear.
