FLEETDRIVE
keep in mind to manage them effectively .
It ’ s by working through global operators that Australian operators can enhance their fleet management and strategy by leveraging these overseas lessons .
But , there is also value in looking domestically for insights and perspectives .
As a peddler of fleet wares , I ’ m very fortunate to be introduced to a broad range of lessons , thoughts , and experiences from many different industries and fleets . The most standout insight came from an AFMA NSW Breakfast in March 2024 . Michael Mills , fleet manager at Essential Energy , gave a brilliant presentation on how to improve safety within businesses proactively , with recognition and positive reinforcement ( the presentation is available in the AfMA library ).
The presentation outlined Essential Energy ’ s strategy of “ flipping the script ” and changing their approach to road safety . Michael ’ s message was clear – recognition matters . How often do you tell your drivers , “ Great job for not speeding this month ”?
By changing the management mindset from retrospective to proactive , instead of drivers being admonished for incorrect action , and recognised for correct action , Essential Energy saw a stark reduction in safety incidents – something we can all achieve with a simple mindset shift and innovative strategy .
It ’ s more personal learnings such as these that are one of the advantages of associations such as AfMA . We are privileged to have great colleagues and counterparts who are willing and open to share their learnings and thoughts on numerous topics and challenges .
Looking forward to seeing you all in 2025 .
