FLEETDRIVE
We commenced with a comprehensive presentation detailing the City of Long Beach ’ s vision , accomplishments , current scenario , and challenges . At its heart , their mission is clear : “ Provide safe , reliable , cost-effective equipment to enable City Departments to achieve their objectives .”
With a committed team of 123 across seven facilities and a FY23 budget of $ 56.9 million , the bureau has an impressive track record . This includes being ranked as the # 5 Fleet in the U . S . for 2023 and the # 2 Green Fleet by NAFA . Their aggressive vehicle replacement strategy and robust alternative fuel programmes stand out .
Nevertheless , challenges persist . The rising costs of fleet management , technological evolution , and talent acquisition and retention are prominent concerns .
Overseeing a diverse fleet of 2,187 units , made up of cars ; light , medium , and heavy-duty trucks ; refuse trucks , sweepers , boats , helicopters , generators , off-road , their aim is to ensure vehicle safety , operability , and consistent availability .
Our visit facilitated engaging dialogues with various divisions , each showcasing their unique contributions to the bureau ’ s overall success , from fleet administration to maintenance , towing , acquisitions , business systems , and fuel . Their
consistent focus on innovation , staff training , technology , and environmental sustainability was evident .
In a world characterised by swift technological advancements and growing environmental consciousness , the Fleet Services Bureau isn ’ t just adapting ; they ’ re leading the movement .
Our thanks go to the department for their hospitality and Mike Antich of Automotive Fleet magazine for orchestrating this invaluable tour .
From the enlightening sessions at the AFLA Conference to the eye-opening visits to the Port of Long Beach and the Fleet Services Bureau , City of Long Beach each moment was a masterclass in its own right . The dedication and passion evident in every industry leader , manager , and professional we met spoke volumes about the future of our industry . As we head home , we carry with us not just memories but also a repository of knowledge and a renewed sense of purpose . This tour was a testament to the value of global collaboration , and we ’ re optimistic about the shared journey ahead .
