While many facts and figures were shared , some stood out more than others . For instance , the revelation that the POLB ranks third in the US , trailing only the mammoth ports of Los Angeles and New York / New Jersey , was an eye-opener . The magnitude of the port ’ s impact , supporting a massive 2.6 million jobs and handling an annual trade volume of $ 2.6 billion , underscores its significance in the global supply chain . The diversity of imports was fascinating , with furniture on the top of the list , apparel , electronics , vehicle parts , and toys leading the way .
We were also introduced to the Supply Chain Information highway . This avant-garde data dashboard is more than just a tool ; it ’ s a revolution that allows supply chain stakeholders to customise data for optimal planning , scheduling , and decision-making .
It was abundantly clear that the POLB isn ’ t resting on its success . With a forward-thinking vision , the port is leading the charge in ecofriendly and tech-driven practices . As they embark on the ambitious journey towards zeroemission operations , several initiatives have taken the spotlight :
Automated Equipment : Select terminals are embracing the future with automated equipment , ensuring efficiency and precision .
Electric Cranes : A testament to their commitment , the POLB ’ s modern cranes are fully electrified , setting a benchmark in reducing carbon footprint .
Grants : The proactive approach in securing grants showcases their dedication to a greener future .
Clean Air Action Plan ( CAAP ): A collaborative effort between the Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles , this plan is a blueprint for a sustainable tomorrow .
The tour ’ s grand finale was nothing short of spectacular : a harbour cruise that painted the vast expanse of the port in all its glory . Words might fall short to express our appreciation for this amazing experience . We ’ re grateful to Mechelle S . Ngin for her outstanding hospitality and Mike Antich , Automotive Fleet magazine for organising this informative tour .
City of Long Beach - Fleet Services Bureau

We were warmly welcomed by key personnel : Dan Berlenbach ( Department of Financial Management ); Ryan Van Andle ( Fleet Finance Officer ); Juan Mercado ( Superintendent of Acquisitions ); and Oliver Cruz ( Officer for Fuel and UST Operations ).
