Stellantis is testing eFuels on 28 engine families to reduce carbon emissions in their 28 million internal combustion engines ( ICE ) built since 2014 in Europe .
eFuels are made from captured atmospheric CO2 and renewable energy and are a drop-in replacement synthetic fuel . The use of eFuels could offer an affordable option for customers to decarbonize their vehicles without replacing them or upgrading the engine fuel system .
Stellantis is committed to selling only battery-electric vehicles ( BEV ) in Europe by the end of the decade but is exploring complementary solutions to reduce CO2 emissions .
The company is investing over € 30 billion in electrification and software to deliver BEVs , and its long-term strategic plan aims to slash CO2 in half by 2030 and achieve carbon net zero by 2038 .
Scania and Northvolt have jointly developed a high-performance , low-carbon footprint battery cell for heavy electric vehicles , which has demonstrated a lifetime of 1.5 million kilometers in validation tests , equivalent to the lifetime of the truck .
The cell is being produced at Northvolt Ett gigafactory in Sweden and will be assembled into battery packs at Scania ’ s new battery factory in Södertälje , Sweden , for the production of heavy-duty electric trucks .
The cell has a capacity of 157 Ah and a nominal voltage of 3.6 V . It has a carbon footprint that is approximately one-third that of a comparative industry reference cell due to being produced using fossilfree electricity generated by hydro power and wind power .
First Hydrogen has partnered with Rivus to conduct operational trials with a hydrogen fuel cell-powered light commercial vehicle ( LCV ).
Rivus , a UK-based fleet management company that manages approximately 120,000 vehicles , will test one of First Hydrogen ’ s LCVs for a month in the Birmingham and Sheffield areas , measuring performance under different driving conditions .
The trial will help First Hydrogen optimize vehicle performance and determine total cost of ownership . Rivus will produce an independent report on the performance of the vehicle , providing insight into the benefits and practicality of adopting hydrogen mobility .
