TASMANIA A thief stole a government-owned
car from a hospital in northern Tasmania and took
it on a 160km joyride. Five government vehicles
were taken from Launceston General Hospital in
the early hours of Monday morning after more
than 30 sets of car keys were stolen from a
security box at the facility.
One car was found dumped at St Helens on the
state’s east coast after the driver evaded police
before running off into bushland. The remaining
cars were recovered from Launceston, Invermay
and the town of Perth. A teenager and a 24-yearold
man were arrested.
“I don’t know the motive behind the theft or what
the intentions were,” Tasmania Police Inspector
Darren Hopkins told reporters.
