Interview By Jourdan Brown Where There’s a Wil... There’s Some Serious Fun Wil in Motion W hether it was fortune, fate or coincidence that brought Wil Negrillo to our door, who can Kelly say? But we're sure happy it happened! Wil's infectious spirit fills the gym whenever he's there, and his fun, sexy dance moves have ignited our Zumba program. I recently had the opportunity to speak with Wil about the gym, Zumba and his new class, Pound. JB: When did you become interested in dance/Zumba? WN: Well, dance has always been my passion since I was little. I danced at parties, I danced at school…I tried to make my own dance club at school because they didn't have any dance programs. I started Zumba in college. I tried a Zumba fitness class not even knowing it was called Zumba and before I knew it the instructor had me covering for her classes and really got me into it. When I came back to New York after college an instructor told me to go and get certified for Zumba, and I went quicker than a hurry. JB: What made you want to become a Zumba instructor? WN: What motivated me the most was the joy that I brought to people whenever I danced and the satisfaction I would get from someone coming up to Spring 2014 FIT to Print me and telling me that they have lost weight or are achieving their goals. JB: What's your favorite style of dance? WN: I've always been passionate about salsa but for some reason the belly dancing just takes over me every single time. JB: Where do you get your inspiration from? WN: People; I watch videos. Most of the time I see a move, I like it, I use it. Also, if I'm out thinking about a song it just comes naturally. JB: In your Zumba classes, are you using a set routine that your certification taught you or do you use your own moves? WN: Well, technically Zumba is supposed to be a 70% routine that they hand out to you and 30% your own moves. I probably use about 60% of my own moves and 40% of their moves. Only because it keeps it different from other Zumba classes and makes the class my style as opposed to just generic “Zumba fitness.” JB: Do you have any dance idol? WN: Oh my god, Beyonce. Beyonce is my god…my goddess actually. JB: What's your favorite part about a class when you teach? WN: I have to say when the class is at a peak and everyone is yelling and so into the class that they're not even paying attention to me anymore. They are just doing their own thing. That's my favorite part. continued on page 29, col 3 9
