What marks this generation shift were the technological advances related to audio and especially video capability, marking the generation as 8-bit era. The sounds made by the consoles came in a wider range and by the extra number of boxes and it was possible to give a feeling that the sound came from a certain direction. Higher cartridge resolutions coupled with increased color palette capacity gave games the ability to be more fluid and more colorful.
A breakthrough this generation brought with Nintendo Family Computer (The Famicom) game The Legend of Zelda was that the player no longer had to start over from the beginning when he wanted to play, because it was now possible to save his progress in the game. It was possible after a difficult phase for the player to stop playing, rest and continue later without having to leave the console on or restart everything. This feature was so well accepted by the gaming community that it became almost mandatory from then on.
