Dan Mathisen of Dan ’ s Delta Outdoors reported huge striped bass to 40 inches have been removed from the San Joaquin Delta by fishermen taking out red worms for bluegill and using the live bait for the huge stripers .
He said , “ For largemouth bass , swim jigs , spinnerbaits , and buzzbaits in bait fish patterns are working best with the buzzbaits working best first thing in the morning . The bait fish patterns have been more effective than crawdad patterns at the present time .”
Catfish to 10 pounds have been landed in Victoria Canal and Discovery Bay with fresh shad which remains a possibility in Stockton-area bait shops .

“ Bridgeport Reservoir is still offering excellent fishing up in the Buckeye Bay Area , as well as out in a little deeper water . There ’ s also been a few anglers reporting decent catches trolling . I haven ’ t heard much from the fly anglers , though there should be some good stillwater nymphing as well as streamer action if you get over to the bay and fish in the channels . Bait anglers are using pinched crawlers , PowerBait , Mice Tails and night crawlers . Lure anglers are going with Thomas Buoyants , Rapalas , Speedy Shiners and crawlers ,” said Reid .
“ In terms of river fishing , the East Walker is down to about 340 cfs right now and is starting to fish pretty well . It seems it ’ s still just a little high for some anglers but there are lots of anglers who are able to fish it at this flow and do very well . Nymphing has been the main thing going on but there has been a few good reports on streamers ,” added Reid .

OROVILLE - Salmon fishing on the Feather River below the Thermalito Afterbay Outlet has red lined in recent days . While the action had been decent for much of August , things really shifted into high gear as August gave way to September .
“ Four days ago , the salmon fishing in the Feather River got really good and the fish are running large ,” disclosed Robert Weese of Northern California Guide Service . “ I ’ ve been getting limits of chromers every day this week and they are really nice fish . day and then I switch over to bouncing roe . Some days we have limits in the boat before the plug bite slows down and we are off the water without ever breaking out the roe ,” Weese added .
“ I ’ m averaging about 6 hook-ups and two salmon landed per day ,” reported Rob Reimers of Rustic Rob ’ s Guide Service . “ The fish have ranged anywhere from 8 to 30 pounds .”
He said there has been a lot of pressure on the river , with over 20 boats fishing there per day , along with lots of bank anglers .
“ I ’ ve been anchoring up below the outlet in the morning then back trolling up in the rapids later in the day ,” he noted . “ I ’ ve been catching the fish on Brad ’ s Killer Fish in the dragonfly pattern .”
“ A few salmon are also being taken on spinners and plugs in the Boyd ’ s Pump area ,” he added .
Bank anglers are rounding up limits and near limits of salmon while tossing Blue Fox Spinners during the early morning hours . Anglers using ethical techniques are hooking fish in the mouth , but reports indicate that upwards of 75 % of the kings brought in by the bankies are foul hooked .
Combined water releases below the Thermalito Afterbay Outlet are 7,000 cfs .

HORNBROOK - The Upper Klamath River from below the Iron Gate Fish Hatchery to Interstate 5 has been providing some great summer steelhead and trout action .
“ We have been catching and releasing fish in the 1 to 6 pound class every trip ,” revealed Scott Caldwell of SC Guide Service . “ Hatchery fish ( which you can keep ) have become pretty rare the last few years , but have made an appearance from time to time as well .”
He said backtrolling bait or plugs both dipped in Pro-Cure Carpspit have been the most productive methods for hooking up . Yakima bait company Maglips have been the plug that have produced the big fish almost every trip .
“ Steelhead over 20 inches in the 4 to 7 pound class were caught on the 2.5 version ,” he tipped . “ The color patterns were different every time .”
“ The best time to fish has been from first light to 11 am ,” he advised . “ The bites slow once the sun fully hits river , but quality fish can still be caught ,” he stated .
CDFW reminds anglers that fall Chinook salmon fishing is prohibited Aug . 15 through Dec . 31 on the Klamath River . Angling for steelhead remains open on the river for the rest of the year .
