For largemouth bass, Randy Pringle,
the Fishing Instructor, said, “The bass
are getting active as there are a lot of
fry in the water. The bass are focusing
upon the fry, and they are in all stages of
spawning as they are on beds, in spawn,
and also in post-spawn modes. You can
catch crankbait fish throughout the day,
and spinnerbaits are working on windy
days. Flipping a black/red Chigger Craw
will catch the most fish, and there is a
top water bite as the water temperature
is coming up as it is in the 60’s right now.
There is no problem catching fish, but the
bigger giants have been hard to find. We
had had a few swirls, but overall the larger
fish have been lethargic.”
Kris Huff of Stockton took the second
Wednesday Night Shootout of the year
held out of Ladd’s Marina in Stockton by
a number of elite Delta bass fishermen.
He said, “I walked away with the WIN
during the Wednesday nighter in the
Delta with just shy of 20 pounds with a big
fish at 8.62. I am stoked about this win -
especially with the crowd that shows up.”
Sturgeon fishing remains outstanding
for the few anglers trying. Captain Joe
Gamez of Golden State Sport Fishing was
out on Captain Mike Funtanilla of Bend Ur
Rod’s boat for 9 oversized and three slot
limit sturgeon on Wednesday with plenty
of other missed opportunities.

Trollers Do Best on Big

PORTOLA – The ice is completely off
Lake Davis and trollers are experiencing
the top action on the huge rainbows the
reservoir is known for.
“The fishing is good, but not great,”
reported Jeanne Graham of the J & J
Grizzly Country Store and Campground
Resort. “Boaters are trolling with Dick
Nites in copper red head and red dot frog
in the top 10 feet of water on the lake’s
east side. The fish being caught are big
ones 20 inches and over.”
Shore anglers are experiencing the top
fishing while throwing out PowerBait from
shore at Mallard. Two anglers targeting
trout also reported catching and releasing
12 largemouth bass in the 12 inch class in
the Lightning Tree area.
The surface water temperature is 53
degrees and boat launching is available,

If you like throwing bait, the corn
yellow PowerBait has been the main
bait that anglers out here have been
using to catch the trout. If you have a
boat, we recommend anchoring off to the
center of the cove and drifting your bait.
Kastmasters are great if you want to throw
a lure. We recommend flat chrome or gold
colors.
Big trout honors go to Ed E. of
Livermore, who caught a six-and-a-half
pound trout while fishing spoons in the
Narrows.
The catfish bite is also starting to pick
up as the water temperatures warm.
Many of the catfish that have been caught
are being caught on chicken livers or
anchovies. The catfish are moving around
in the tule patches at various points
around the lake. If you see carp rolling in
the tules, there is a good chance there are
catfish nearby.

Monte Smith of Gold County Sport
Fishing reported on his latest trolling
adventure on the reservoir.
“We had 11 kokanee by midday, and
we had a triple hook up which was pretty
exciting,” he stated. “The kokanee are fat
and a few of them are just ounce shy of 2
pounds at 15 inches”
“They are just beautiful fish, but they
are scattered at depths from 26 to 57
feet. I have been running small hoochies
or Uncle Larry’s spinners behind Sling
Blades, and with the kokanee scattered
out, you have to stay with it. We weren’t
