REPORTS:

CAMANCHE LAKE
Trollers Focus on Rainbows
BURSON – The trout plants at Lake
Camanche may be over for the season,
but the trout action is just getting started
for trollers, as the planted rainbows have
migrated towards the deepest part of the
lake near the dam.
The Central Valley Anglers out of Lodi
held their annual Team Trout Derby and
club spokesman, Ted Handel of Lodi, said,
“Most teams trolled Speedy Shiners at
depths from 22 to 40 feet, but one team
scored with plastic grubs or worms.”
Jim Bennion and Jim Fox too first place
with a 3-fish weight of 10.37 pounds
including the big fish at 6.3 pounds with
Stan Ita and Glenn Greenwell in second at
6.43 pounds, followed by Gary Patterson,
Sid Miller, and Kreig Williams at 5.82
pounds
Jesse and Monique Hall of Elk Grove
were also in the dam area the same day,
and he said, “We were running Speedy
Shiners in black/pink in a football field size
area near the dam, and we had lots of
action with a few doubles. Of course, my
better half, Monique, scored the big fish of
the day at just over 6 pounds.”

CLEAR LAKE
Largemouth Bass in Different
Stages of Spawn
CLEARLAKE – Black bass are in
different stages of their annual spawn at
Clear Lake.
“The fish are in the pre-spawn, spawn
and post-spawn modes,” reported Dave
Burruss at Clear Lake Outdoors. “They’re
hitting best on Senkos fished anywhere
from 2 to 20 feet deep. The bigger fish

Brush Hogs.”
On his latest
adventure on the
lake, Burruss
reported catching
and releasing
10 largemouths
ranging from 3 to
6 pounds while
flipping with Texas-
rigged Brush Hogs
in heavy growth.
“The crappie
fishing is slower,
but anglers are
still hooking them,”
said Burruss. “The
post-spawn fish are
ranging from 1 to
2 pounds. Shore

Ryan doesn’t like me to give away his
secrets but he’s got enough custom lures
that honestly even if you knew what it was
it might not be something you could buy.
My advice: troll@20ft with a bright Rapala
or Needlefish.
If you can avoid the weekends you
won’t have to look for boat trailer parking.
Monday was just about perfect. If you’re
fishing from shore you might try hiking
Hidden Spruce Trail or walking around
the south east side since the lake is still
completely full so the flooded spillway flats
limit available shoreline.
This last week felt like an early summer
and we’ve got the surface temperatures to
prove it. Conventional wisdom is to look
for bass spawning at 55F to 65F. Today’s
morning reading at 3ft was 68.2F and on
a hot afternoon your depth finder read the
surface up to 73F but ignoring the depth
vs temperature calculations I think I can
say empirically that bass are still in pre-
spawn.
With the skunk from three weeks ago
thoroughly evacuated, I am itching for
the wind to die down to try my luck in a
quiet cove for a trophy bass. I have seen
a few catfish & crappie but I think for the
moment it’s more novelty than news, but
it won’t be long before I’ll be publishing
panfish.

Caples Lake: Trout Fishing Fun On The Crest Of The Sierras!
ome trout fishing destinations
offer superb angling, others offer
exceptional scenery, still others boast
both. Caples Lake, setting near the
crest of Sierras is near the top of this
list providing both lights out fishing for
rainbows, browns, brook trout and macks
and breath taking high country views.
Caples is full to the brim and will be
great fishing all
summer and
fall.
Caples Lake encompasses about 600
surface acres when at full capacity,
setting at an elevation of 7,806 feet
near Carson Pass. Unlike many of the
Sierra’s high country trout lakes that
require stout hiking boots or four wheel
drive vehicles to access them, Caples
offers easy access to both bank anglers
and boaters.
Highway 88 traces the entire northern
shoreline of Caples, offering bank
anglers excellent opportu-
nities mere feet from the
pavement. For the boating
fraternity, the lake
boasts a pair of launch
ramps, one is private at Caples Lake
Resort and the other public administered
by the U.S. Forest Service.
