T he Happy Hooker is one of the most prominent charter boats in Northern California. The boat has a long and storied history. For many years, the Hooker was skippered by the legendary Jim Smith. Jim retired last year and the boat is now being run by his son and legendary skipper in his own rite, Captain Chris Smith and Chris’s son, Captain Jonathan Smith. Whether you’re chasing halibut inside San Francisco Bay, lingcod at the Farallon Islands or sturgeon in San Pablo or Suisun Bay, Chris knows S.F. During the spring, live bait potluck fishing in San Francisco Bay is the focus aboard the Hooker, with halibut and stripers being the primary target. As spring gives way to summer, stripers and halibut remain in the cross hairs, yet the fishing menu opens up a bit with rockfish and lingcod entering into the mix. The Happy Hooker operates out of the Berkeley Marina from May through December. During the winter months it’s off to the Martinez Marina for lazy days of sturgeon fishing. Cal Kellogg will be aboard the Happy Hooker hunting for sturgeon on February 8.
