Starting from square one

Colt Jones comes into the most unique situation of any team featured in this magazine. Coming off a 0-10 season, Jones is the third Weatherford Christian head coach in as many years. Moreover, the program still finds its way into the mix of 6-man football as it enters its third year back after spending much time in 11-man.
Although Jones didn’ t experience the woes of 2024 firsthand, some Lion players did. Will Muhlenkamp, Grant Vick, Walker Finney and Wyatt Jones all felt the struggle of a team that never found a strong work ethic or consistency in its offensive game plan.
“ Last year, we were dragging our feet every practice, just trying to make it through,” said Finney.
From a viewer’ s perspective, Colt believed the kids were demoralized by the time district play started.
The junior high turned varsity coach has been preparing since February to turn it around in 2025.
Still very early in the process, step one was to incorporate an offseason program during the summer, which had not been in place before.
So far, it’ s paid dividends for the program as 24 players are expected for the week one roster. A returning characteristic of the Lions is the dependence on youth. In 2024, the team relied heavily on sophomores.
Now, a large freshman class comes in that has embraced the new ways of the program.
The Lions admitted that there was no emphasis on weight training last season. Muhlenkamp said there’ s already a difference this summer as WCS is not only in the weight room, but there’ s“ good noise” coming from every team member, regardless of classification.
