The countdown is on. St. Augustine, the nation’s oldest city, will be marking the 450th year of its founding in the year 1565 this September, and it’s a big deal as far as anniversaries go. The 450th anniversary has been much anticipated over the past several years. Momentous occasions leading up to the anniversary that celebrate the diverse cultural influences in St. Augustine include the 200th anniversary of the Spanish Constitution in 2012, the 500th anniversary of the discovery of Florida by Ponce de Leon in 2013, and the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act in 2014. The city has big plans for the commemorative celebration that will take place Sept. 4-8 at various locations throughout St. Augustine, a celebration that will highlight the city and showcase its rich history, diverse culture as the nation’s oldest city as it pays homage to the past and looks towards the future. Included in the festivities is a free 3-day street and music festival will take place Sept. 4-6 with live entertainment on five stages throughout downtown St. Augustine. Local and national headliners have been booked for concert performances including Aaron Neville and Mavis Staples, Justin Townes Earle, JJ Grey and Mofro, and Emmylou Harris & Rodney Crowell. Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for active military and seniors ages 60 and over, $1 for children 4-12, children 4 and under are free. Sept. 4 through Sept. 5: Paranormal Investigations at the Old Jail Guided paranormal tours of the Old Jail take place every Friday and Saturday night from 10:30 p.m.-1:30 a.m. The cost is $80 per person. Aug. 19 & 26 and Sept. 2, 9, 16 & 23: Veneration and Viewing of the Relic of St. Augustine On select Wednesdays in August and September starting at 7 p.m., the Cathedral Basilica will be open for the public to view a first-class relic of Augustine of Hippo, the city of St. Augustine’s patron saint. The relic is on loan from the Vatican Treasury in Italy to the Diocese of St. Augustine for the 450th celebration of the City of St. Augustine and the founding of America’s first Catholic parish.
