From the Rig to the Roof

What’s your operation ?
For the purposes of this article we’ll be specifically
addressing flat roof ventilation operations.
Successful roof operations are, as most fire-ground
operations go, about controlling what we can and
eliminating variables. When we do not posses an
operation (SOG) or fail to exercise the tactical
discipline to follow through and carry out that
operation, then we leave unmitigated variables,
which can injure or kill us. Firefighting is about your
ability to maintain tactical discipline. Having the
discipline to carry out the experienced-based
operation that you've trained on will set you up for
success and help to maintain an increased level of
safety throughout the evolution. The operation’s
success is measured by how timely and effective we
are as a roof team in supporting the extinguishment
effort while simultaneously keeping ourselves out of
trouble and arriving back down on the ground
unharmed. If you do not posses an operation, then I
would advise you to watch the video below and read
this article thoroughly. You might be leaving too
many variables on the table that may jump up and
bite you as the fire fight escalates. These variables
create that often cited "chain of events" we should
all be trying to avoid. Get an operation and don't
take short cuts!
