Knowledge and Abilities
KNOWLEDGE :
• Thorough knowledge of modern firefighting principles , practices , equipment and techniques as well as medical care skills included in the EMT / Paramedic curricula .
• Comprehensive knowledge of the state fire laws , building codes , hazardous materials and Town water systems .
ABILITIES :
• Plans , assigns , directs and evaluates the work of a number of subordinates .
• Directs large-scale operations of firefighters and equipment under emergency conditions .
• Prepares and manages budgets .
• Establishes and maintains effective and harmonious relationships with subordinates , the general public and Town of Jupiter officials .
• Formulates fire rules , standards and procedures .
• Communicates clearly and concisely both orally and in writing .
• Acts as a public safety lead for the Town of Jupiter in crisis situations .
Preferred Education & Experience
• A Master ’ s Degree in Public Administration or a closely related field .
• A graduate of the National Fire Academy Executive Fire Officer Program .
• A Chief Fire Officer Designation from the Center for Public Safety Excellence .
• A State of Florida Fire Inspector I Certification .
Minimum Requirements
EXPERIENCE :
• A minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible experience as a Fire Officer , with at least five years at a senior fire rescue department .
• Five or more years at a level of Chief Officer or Deputy Chief in a similar sized or larger department .
• Possession of a valid State of Florida Firefighter I Certification .
EDUCATION :
• A Bachelor ’ s degree from an accredited college or university in Fire Administration , Public Administration or a closely-related field .
EQUIVALENCY :
• A comparable amount of training , education or experience can be substituted for the minimum qualifications .
LOCATION :
• Must live within 30 miles of the Town of Jupiter ’ s Town Hall within one year of appointment , unless otherwise approved by the Town Manager .
OTHER :
• Possession of a valid Florida driver ’ s license .
• For application purposes , a valid driver ’ s license from any state may be utilized . If selected , a candidate must obtain a State of Florida license within 30 days from the date of employment .
