NEW LIFE
FOR SOUTH MARKET
Words by Ty Unglebower
If you’ve ever been on a Hollywood movie set, maybe you’ve seen
standalone façades – one-dimensional buildings painted and propped up
from behind to look like entire houses or businesses from a distance.
But you don’t need to go all the way to Hollywood to see such things. Since
the year 2000, the “buildings” along South Market Street (addresses 58
through 70) have been façades. What appears to be a group of boarded-up
buildings are actually just one-dimensional paintings with metal supports
among grass and some rubble behind them keep them upright to the street.
Most of the buildings at these addresses were torn down 15 years ago, their
long-derelict status making them beyond repair. The city government is
considering plans and proposals for a permanent change to these lots, but before
that happens, an artist is seeking permission to turn the façades into a temporary
art installation.
