National Employment Returns (NER) 2018 Figure 3.7 Top 5 Critical Areas of Skills / Training Required for Malaysian Full-Time Employees by MASCO 1-Digit Level Training Training in the workplace is widely recognised as a key means to improving skills, productivity and competitiveness, which would ultimately stimulate the economic growth. Overall Observations 59% of the establishments provided training to their employees, either through in-house and/or external training. 40% of the establishments sent their staff to in-house training only, 26% to external training only while 21% of the establishments sent their staff to both in-house and external training (refer to Figure 3.8). Overall, about 5.1 million employees 2 were provided training between the period of January to December 2017. Half of them received only in-house training while 21% of them received external training only. 2 The figure may involve an element of over counting as the establishments were asked about the number of staff they trained by in-house training and public training. The same employees could have attended both types of training. Besides, the establishments were not required to specify whether the staff they trained over the last 12 months are still with the establishments. Hence someone who was trained in the last 12 months but who left to join another employer who provided that person with training would be counted twice (if both employers were interviewed for the survey). 78
