SUSTAINABLE FASHION WHY NOW? | JANET HETHORN
OVER-DRESSED | ELIZABETH C CLINE
This book is divided into three sections, people, processes, and the environment. This is a very in depth representation of the effects certain aspects of the fashion have on the environment. For example I learned a huge amount on the economical aspect in regards to China who are global market leaders. The demand is high to produce for the West therefore China are increasing the quality and also looking into the sustainable factors. They are becoming huge supporters of helping to reduce the impact by promoting and endorsing companies who want them to reach there environmental goals. For example materials trying to find alternatives to leather and on an enormous scale, step by step could be successful in our current market.
Of all 4 of the books I looked at Clines was the most shocking. In a sense this played to the modern society and how it is captivated in everyday fast fashion. Firstly the idea that we addicted to low cost fashion, this means that we are buying more but paying less. Hoarding is becoming the norm and unfortunately our environment is paying for it. Anther factor which struck me was the life cycle of our garments, for example Zara has a mere two week cycle it goes from design, produce, deliver, display, and then sold all within 14 days. We are living in a society which has complete over consumption and a decline in craftsmanship. This needs to change and hopefully more brands will begin to realise their damage before it becomes worse.
