The National 5 Biology course allows candidates to understand and investigate the living world in an engaging and enjoyable way . It develops candidates ’ abilities to think analytically , creatively and independently , and to make reasoned evaluations .
The course provides opportunities for candidates to acquire and apply knowledge to evaluate biological issues , assess risk , make informed decisions and develop an ethical view of complex issues . Candidates can develop their communication , collaborative working and leadership skills , and can apply critical thinking in new and unfamiliar contexts to solve problems .
Entry requirements
Only candidates who are not planning to undertake National 5 Biology at another SQA centre ( e . g . at school ) are eligible to apply for this course .
A pass at National 4 Biology , or standard Grade 3 or above .

This course allows you to study the sciences at National 5 Level , developing the necessary scientific skills and expertise with a view to progressing to a Higher level course at SCQF Level 6 or directly into employment in one of the fastgrowing , well-paid specialist STEM sectors .

This course will provide you with the skills and qualifications required for entry to health and life sciences degrees , as well as professions allied to medicine . Scottish Wider Access Programmes , ( SWAP ) courses , are for adults who have few or no formal qualifications and who have been out of full-time education for at least three years ( five years if you have Highers or an HNC / HND ).
Entry requirements
Although there are no formal entry requirements for this course , a good general education with some maths and communication – ideally two National 4s – would be advantageous
Entry is by informal discussion where you will be asked to demonstrate that you have the relevant life skills to successfully complete the SWAP course
Evidence of life skills may include level of maturity , and experience of skills related to the potential choice of degree subject , including paid employment or volunteering and awareness of subject choice
