Technique 4 - Filling Visible Nail Holes (narrower than 1/16”)
3 T4.1
Check the
hole for flat-
ness.
If the nail hole
has slight
ridges or rip-
ples around
it, no amount
of filling will
repair this
condition well.
3 T4.2
In RTF material, these ridges can be pushed down by carefully hitting the hole with
the smooth back end of a nail set and a hammer.
These slight ridges can also be flattened by carefully cutting them flush with a razor blade.
Once the area immediately around the hole is flat, it can be filled successfully.
Types of Fillers
There are two different fillers that can be used for holes of this size. Mohawk Patchal Putty and Fil-Stik
wax filler.
The putty is very easy to use but is a bit less durable in comparison. It works very well for filling small nail
holes in Crown Molding and other areas that do not receive a lot of handling or cleaning during normal
use.
The Fil-Stik is a harder filler. It is slightly more difficult to use, but is more durable than the putty. Use the
Fil-Stik whenever the patch will need to stand up to handling or cleaning such as for nail holes in Lightrail
Molding.
