Installing Rough Top
and Build Up

Step 1
Layout the RoughTop

Calculate the
lengths of Rough Top
needed for an installa-
tion by measuring the
actual run of cabinets
as installed.
As with molding, al-
locate what is needed
for the longest spans
fi rst.
Rough Top for Tile and Stone

Rough Top may
be specifi ed at different
thicknesses.

Rough Top is the material
used to cover cabinets
that will help strengthen
the cabinetry and support
the countertop
installation.

For Tile
It is critical that this
material is installed care-
fully and within standards
as the life of the
countertop material
depends on it.
This material is usually
specifi ed as 3/4” or 5/8”
exterior grade plywood
panels and must be cut
to fi t the installed cabi-
nets by the installer.

Cabinet installations that
are to support a mortar
and tile countertop will
utilize Rough Top mate-
rial that is 3/4” thick.
Cabinet installations that
are to be covered with
slab stone such as gran-
ite or quartz will use 5/8”
thick Tough Top.
For tile, index the Rough
Top 1/2” forward of the
cabinet face and fl ush to
the cabinet sides.

the face and sides of a
cabinet.
