3.6 Using nails in decorative molding is a neces- sary evil. Each nail placement in a fi nished visible surface will require some sort of touch up or repair and if not enough are used, the molding may come loose and require a service call. Strike a balance in how many nails you use and where they are placed to securely install the molding and mini- mize the damage caused. Guideline for Using Nails to Secure Finished Crown Molding Use 1” or 1-1/4”, 18ga. brads to fasten Crown Mold- ing to Sub Crown. Use carpenters glue at all Crown Molding joints such as inside and outside corners and splices. 108 Using a single nail and glue to secure a joint is best. Drive the nail through the side of the corner that is least noticeable from view. If a single nail is not suffi cient to secure the joint tightly, drive a second nail from the opposite direction and offset in height from the fi rst. Three nails for a joint is excessive. Keep nails at least 2” away from molding ends unless you are making up a joint. Space nails no further than 18” along a length. Always maintain a consistent Sub Crown reveal. 3.7 Shorter runs are often harder to mate at inside and outside corners. Preassemble short return pieces to longer pieces prior to installing when possible. ©2017 PCS Professional Cabinet Solutions. All Rights Reserved. Section 1: IMS 108 11
