Three steps must be executed accurately in order for a single piece of Crown Molding to fi t properly.
1. The space must be measured correctly.
Begin by confi rming that the tape measure being used is in good condition and will deliver a measurement accurately
regardless of whether it is being pulled or pushed. Confi rm that the hook at the end of the tape measure is not bent.
If measuring from heel to heel, the tape has no area to hook. The end of a properly working tape measure will slide
back and forth a small amount to compensate for the thickness of the hook when it is used for pulling or pushing into
a dimension. It works poorly when there isn’t an edge to hook against or push to. Carefully aligning the tape measure
with its 1” mark (Burning an Inch) at the starting heel then subtracting 1” from the measurement before marking the
piece can yield an accurate measurement.
2. The molding must be marked accurately and in the right place.
The length needed must be transposed to the molding exactly at the Measuring and Marking Edge with a clean, narrow
and perpendicular line. Confi rm that you have hooked the starting end correctly with the tape measure and remember
to add back an inch if you burned one.
3. The molding must be placed in the miter saw at the correct angle and cut accurately on the correct side of
the marking line.
If the molding is not placed in the saw with the lower back fl at against the fence, the length of the cut from heel to toe
will vary, even if the cut begins exactly at the marked line. This can prohibit the crown from matching up correctly to its
mating piece.
