Putting the V back in Vengeance

In a future not so distant from
today, World War III has come
and gone and, in the ruin of the
devastating onslaught of biologically warfare America has
ceased to exist. As for the surviving England, a fascist party
whom preys upon the fear of
the people has taken control of
the government. Stripping the
people of jolly old England bare
of nearly all their civil rights,
dictating what can be shown
through the media, claiming
control of religion itself, and
even controlling as much as
love. Things like art, literature,
music and even movies have
been detained by the government because the ideas represent are seen unfit for the eyes
of its’ citizens.
In a world in which the
people are considered powerless in their lives Evey
Hammond, portrayed by the
breathtaking Natalie Portman,
sneaks about the streets pass
the government issued curfew
on her way to a friend’s house.
But while on her way, she finds
herself in the clutches of a few
crooked police officers that are
ready to have their way with
her. When everything seems to
be at its bleakest for young
Evey from the depths of the
night arises a shadowy figure
only known as V, portrayed by
the devilish Hugo Weaving,
who has a vivacious vocabulary and is even more vivid
with his daggers.
V soon steps beyond the
shadows and exposes himself
to the world demanding his fellow Englishman to join him in
his vigilantism. In his daring
conquest for liberty V uses terrorist tactics to exact his revenge and in memory of a freedom fighter who fell before him,
he decrees that Parliament will
be destroyed on the 5th of November. Yet while all of this
negative light is shed upon the
silent hero, young Evey finds
herself perplexed by the overall audacity of the vigalante
whose face is never shown. But
in while saving V from capture
she is knocked unconscious.
She awakens inside V’s home
and is presented with the knowledge that she herself has become an accomplice in terrorism and is a target of the government. Yet after long hours
in the shadow of the masked
avenger she soon finds herself
beside him in his battle for the
preservation of England.
The Wachowski Brothers,
the creators of the Matrix trilogy, have proven once again
that they can do no wrong. Using the same visual blend of
C.G.I. and real effects the visuals in this film were more than
outstanding. But overall the
most presentable quality this
movie had to offer was its accurate translation from the
graphic novels it was based
upon. The acting was astonishing in the sense that even the
most remotely trite characters
were exceedingly up to par.
The real only downside to this
movie was the semi-repetitive
nature of V’s speaking, while
he did speak eloquently, his talking in riddles was at times a little
difficult to translate. Overall this
movie serves right beside films
such as Frank Miller’s Sin City
as the proper way to translate
a graphic novel onto the silver
screen.
