Embrace technology and
be better off for it
FANCY having Singapore chilli crab cooked by a
robot chef? Well, that could be a common experience
sooner than you think.
Mak’s Place The Hawkerant, a Chinese Muslim
restaurant in the east side of Singapore, has already
deployed a robot chef in its kitchen, a decision
spurred by the manpower crunch in Singapore some
five years ago.
MAKKO, the robot chef, was developed by restau-
rant owner Feroz Mak, who argues that MAKKO is
definitely a big help to the business. The robot works
24 hours a day, alleviating the impact of labour short-
age on operations, and it also raises productivity.
The pre-programmed production workflow for the
robot chef suits well for repetitive work tasks in the
kitchen environment. As the robot is never tired or
sick, it is a highly productive worker, says Feroz Mak.
Another advantage is the consistency of service. A
steak done by the robot chef will always be the same —
medium, medium well, or well-done — on each visit.
Feroz Mak welcomes wider adoption of technol-
ogy-powered production workflow, despite some
common scepticism about whether robots can cook.
“Technology advancement is taking place at such
a rapid pace. Whether we like it or not, it is going
to happen that more and more work processes and
production workflow will be taken over by robots.
“We are wiser to embrace the trend than to try
and shut our door on technology.”
