Describe the role that Peruvian culture, traditions, colors, textures, and craftsmanship play in your design aesthetic.
Peru is present in my work in many ways, but perhaps most deeply through craftsmanship. I have always believed that a beautiful garment should be as special in its construction and finishing as it is from the outside. Sewing and craftsmanship have a long tradition in Peru, with knowledge and techniques passed from one generation to another. Many of the seamstresses and artisans I worked with at the beginning of my career taught me to pay attention to those small details and beautiful finishes that give a garment its soul.
Color is another part of my work that I feel is very Peruvian. I love color and unexpected combinations, although my interpretation is different from traditional Peruvian textiles. I am especially drawn to fabrics that have movement, fabrics that almost come alive when a woman walks.
I also work extensively with Peruvian wool and alpaca, particularly in my coats and tailoring. Alpaca is one of Peru’s treasures; an exquisite natural fiber recognized around the world for its softness, elegance, warmth, and luxurious feel. There is something very meaningful to me about taking a material that comes from my country and transforming it into a piece that can be worn anywhere in the world.
