Colorado
The Emma Crawford Festival is where the first “coffin race” started. Legend has it that Emma Crawford went to Manitou Springs, CO, to find a cure for her tuberculosis, but she unfortunately died. She loved the town, and her dying wish was to be buried at the top of Red Mountain. Several people helped carry her coffin to the top of the mountain, but around 30 years later, her coffin raced down the hill due to changes in weather. Now, the town participates in the race and parade, which features live music and other activities. Participants are scored on their coffin decorations, group costumes, best “Emma,” and the fastest time.
