TRAMPS: Indie films with little known actors are the foundation of festivals like TIFF and "Tramps" is the epitome of an indie gem. Danny (Callum Turner) helps his shady brother complete a briefcase drop-off. This sweet boy wasn't cut out for dirty work and through a series of inadvertent mistakes, Danny finds love in an unlikely fellow conspirator, Ellie (Grace Van Patten). As they traipse through all of NYC, attempting to find the right briefcase, the two get to know one another, find themselves in ironically humorous situations, and learn a little about the world. It's a charming crime-caper story that will remind you why you love films.
MAUDIE: Sally Hawkins and Ethan Hawke star in this love story based on the real life of Maud Lewis, an artist from Nova Scotia. This just might be that film you see nominated for more than one Academy Award this year. The story is eloquently told as we see the injustices continually inflicted upon this woman who's just a little different due to severe childhood arthritis. However, nothing can quell the light that shines so brightly from within this effervescent woman. She's smart, witty, and talented, but this is all blanketed by her shyness. She meets and falls in love with Everett in a most untraditional way, finding true happiness. It's not without bumps in the road, though. This feel-good film will have you laughing, gasping, and smiling the entire time, but bring some tissues as this is one of the most heartfelt films of the year.
