Canadian films, international and US films, documentaries, comedies, dramas, and experimental films are available to see if you’re lucky enough to attend. But if you can’t visit in person, I’ve got an extraordinary list of films that not only will be at your local theater soon, but they just might be nominated for Academy Awards. These films are the best of the fest:
MANCHESTER BY THE SEA: Kyle Chandler and Casey Affleck star in this beautiful tale about two brothers, family obligation, guilt and remorse. Lee (Affleck) escaped his sordid past as he detached himself from his hometown, but his brother’s death brings him back as he is left to care for his teenage nephew. Affleck shines in this raw film, but newcomer Lucas Hedges' powerful performance will leave you speechless.
KATIE SAYS GOODBYE: Olivia Cooke (Me and Earl and the Dying Girl), Christopher Abbot, and Chris Lowell collaborate in a “brutal journey from innocence to experience.” Katie (Cooke) is 17, living in a trailer with her mom, supporting them both as a truck-stop waitress and part-time prostitute. Her goal is to escape her current life, but she meets and falls in love with a newcomer in town. Katie's seemingly eternal optimism is challenged as her past is revealed, and we see the cruel and harsh realities begin to smother her. With outstanding performances and a beautifully powerful story, this film will take your breath away and leave you inspired.
