Despite having years of experience with alcohol, it never ceases to amaze me when I wake up with a dull headache, dry mouth and feel sluggish all day. I mean, one would think I would have learned my lesson by now, or at least know my limits. So on a recent Sunday morning I found myself questioning why exactly my body hated me so much, and what I could have done to prevent another hangover. Perhaps my research will help you too.

Unlike food, alcohol requires no digestion by your body. As a matter of fact, only 20% of the alcohol you drink even passes through your stomach. But this 20% is the portion that can reach the brain in less than one minute. The other 80% of alcohol consumed passes through the duodenum (small intestine), then through the body’s membranes and directly into the bloodstream. This allows alcohol to enter most organs in the body.
