6. Poke - Hawaii

This traditional Hawaiian dish has its roots in the island's ancient history. The word "poke" means "to slice" or "cut crosswise into pieces" in Hawaiian. Historically, native Hawaiians would season raw fish, usually ahi tuna, with whatever was on hand, like sea salt, seaweed, and crushed kukui nuts. This simple, rustic preparation was a way to savor the fresh catch of the day. The modern incarnation of poke, which typically includes soy sauce, green onions, rice, sesame oil, and other various toppings, evolved with the influence of various Asian cuisines, particularly Japanese, as immigrants arrived in Hawaii. Poke has since become a beloved local staple and has gained immense popularity worldwide, often featuring diverse ingredients and flavors, transcending its traditional Hawaiian origins.
