3. Get active
I don’t know about you, but as the holiday season approaches, I start thinking of all the food I’m going to eat and all the hot mulled wine or eggnog I’m going to get to enjoy. But all that means calories. One of my healthiest holidays incorporated activity and fitness along with the family gathering food fests. Running an 8k with the entire family before the all-day group meal prep and all evening indulgence helped combat the calories, while at the same time allowing for fun and togetherness. With each person having a dish to prepare or role to play, everyone feels more appreciated and at the end of the day, happier. Another year, the men in the family did the turkey meal prep while the women went to a hot yoga class. We bonded, felt like we made some room for the meal to come and let the guys show their mastery in the kitchen. Finding ways to get your body moving rather than just eating and drinking while sitting isn’t so hard with a little creativity. You don’t have to be a runner or yogi either. How about a family treasure hunt that gets people outside searching for items? Or a day walking around the zoo or a museum … anything is better than braving the crowds at malls on Black Friday.
