When your work is more of an art than a science, you’ll find you spend a lot of time defending yourself from the assumptions of those in more “scientific” positions. What you may not expect is that you’ll also have to defend yourself, from you.
Think of fine art. A collector may not understand why a painting is worth $10,000, but they will buy it because they like the piece and an expert has told them it’s a worthwhile investment. Perhaps they are intrigued by the artist’s inspiration or personal story. Should the collector ever cash in on this investment, there can be no telling how much they’d make. There are so many factors at play, such as the market, the connection potential buyers have with the piece, where the artist is now in his or her career - after all, it’s an art, not a science.
