Practical Steps Toward Emotional Growth

Shattering the “Strong Silent Type” does not require a drastic overhaul of one’s personality. Here are some simple steps toward becoming more emotionally open:

Pause before reacting in an emotionally charged situation

Remain calm in a disagreement with others

Say “That hurt me” and work through the issue, rather than withdrawing from it

Listen and take it in before immediately looking for a way to “fix” the problem

Express thanks and appreciation openly

Identify how you are feeling

Ask someone how they are really doing, and open up about how you are really doing as well

Reflect on how you feel, rather than suppressing it

Consider therapy or counseling if needed

While these steps may seem simplistic, they can add up to significant growth over time.

A New Model of Masculinity

Masculinity is not dying out; it’s evolving. The new form of masculinity doesn’t eliminate strength, resilience, or success; it expands it. Masculinity is no longer about being the strong, silent type. That may have worked in a different time, but it doesn’t work in a world where communication, cooperation, and mental health are prized. Masculinity is about being strong, but it’s no longer about being silent. Masculinity is about being present and being present means showing up.
