One of my favorite things about living here is how Chicago collectively embraces the outdoors. The moment it’s nice out, patios fill up, parks hum with energy, and sidewalks buzz with people soaking in the sunshine like it’s a limited-time offer—because it kind of is. I love that visitors pick up on that vibe, too. A relative recently visited and suggested a “casual” 10-mile bike ride along the lakefront before breakfast. I was thrilled to lace up my sneakers and lead the charge to the nearest Divvy station.

Even during those heatwave days when it hits 95+, Chicagoans adapt. I shifted my walks to early mornings and evenings—and I wasn’t alone. At 7 a.m. on a Saturday, the lakefront was packed with joggers, cyclists, and sunrise swimmers, all trying to beat the heat.

Another thing I cherish is exploring different neighborhoods on foot. Walking is one of the best (and cheapest) ways to discover the city’s charm and character. All it really requires is a good pair of shoes—though it does sometimes lead to unexpected detours into cute local shops. I call that supporting the local economy.
