The Fourth of July is the time we celebrate independence in the U.S. But since marrying into my Canadian family, we do things a little differently. We celebrate Canada Day, in Florida, and have been doing it for years. I’m not Canadian, but my entire household is, so I celebrate with them. In honor of the holiday, here are some fun facts about our friendly neighbors to the north, my own observations… and some cute pics of my little Canadians.

My observations:

It’s so hard to talk weather or distance with the in-laws. They don’t do Fahrenheit, they do Celsius. They don’t do miles, they do kilometers. (And math isn’t my thing.)

There is a stereotype that Canadians are polite people who are passionate about hockey. (Stereotypes exist for a reason, right? In this case all true.)

In Canada, there is no “Black Friday” but there is a “Boxing Day” and it’s the day after Christmas. (Their Thanksgiving is also earlier.)

They spell differently than we do. They put the letter “u” in words like colour and favourite.

They recycle. Everything…. Every. Single. Thing.

Even what’s left over from the lobster.)

Americans call it “college.” Canadians call it “university.” Americans call it “kindergarten.” Canadians call it “grade primary.”

As you can see, Canadians have their own language that I have slowly learned over the years. Here’s some more:
