grew up without a
lot of luxuries. My
parents did
the best they could but, on a waitress, and house painter’s budget, and with two little sisters, things were tight. That was hard because in the town that I grew up in, most folks were pretty well off financially. I’d wear the same pair of jeans five times a week hoping no one noticed as the other kids rotated through new outfits every day. I always tried to get invited to my friend’s homes instead of extending an invite to our house, where my bedroom was barely big enough to fit a twin bed. Money (or the lack of it) wasn’t our families only shortfall, but it was the one I tied my self-worth to as a child. When you think you’re not enough, you open the door to all kinds of people, which is exactly what happened when I moved to Chicago after high school.
