Layering fabrics and finishes with different textures is my absolute favorite! Textures are used to bring balance to a space by creating depth and dimensions, whether they are great or small. For example, a more contemporary home would see use of smooth, simple textures such as polished finishes (metals, stones, tile, wood), soft leathers, or fine and tight woven elements. This keeps the space looking clean, precise, and cool. On the opposite spectrum, using textured wall coverings such as grasscloth and layering fabrics with patterns and movements can make a space feel welcoming and cozy. Textiles are not only a major player when creating a space that is not just contemporary or traditional, but also whether a place feels luxurious,
sophisticated or casual. This
is where the fun starts and
we get to blend the
different textures to really
determine the mood and
attitude of the space! You
want a coastal chic space?
Consider mixing elements
made of linens, cottons,
grasscloth, sisal and open
grain woods. These
materials are natural,
breathable, and light, like
the sea salt air. Perhaps a
more formal and
sophisticated penthouse is
you’re taste. Try blending
materials that are rich and
soft to the touch such as
mohair upholstery, silk wall
coverings, velvet and satins.
Either way, it’s created by
carefully and strategically
placing textures throughout
the space.
Incorporating the senses of
hearing and smell are both
essential elements of design.
Determining the level of
acoustics in the room is
important and designers
take that into consideration when planning rooms that are to be calming, quiet, and reflective vs. energizing, loud, and engaging.
